Car culture isn't dying, it's changing, and will change, like everything must. Adapt or die. BMW is committed to the Manual trans, electric cars will be fun, and hybrids are now hypercars, so no, car culture won't die, it will change. Shut up you grumpy old men.

People were saying the same things in the 80's when emissions regulations were getting tighter and mechanical devices to meet those regs weren't so good yet. They found a way to not only clean up emissions, but increase performance! There was some strong resistance to going fuel injected and computer controlled at the time, though. It will pass.

Certain parts of the culture are dying, there is no doubt about that.

To your point there are fads that will come and go but the hobby will always be there in one way or another.

I just feel like some are expecting it to fade away entirely. Do you know how to stop that? Loving cars.

At the same time, that stuff has probably contributed to more of a gulf developing between classics aficionados and modern car enthusiasts. I think the former group tends to consider itself more the true mantle-wearers, so the question is more whether the latter group will change to the point there are no common grounds between them and the classics guys - and adoption of cars past the electronics-pocalypse into the classics canon has been arduous and painful. I think Barrett Jackson fever has some worrying that classics scarcity will continue until the classics crowd have no more cheap classics left, and they're the gateway to the community at this point - fewer people of the new generation getting into classics because their father or grandfather had a malingering half-dead semi-classic he drove every day.

Couldn't agree more. Every time there's an architectural change in the automotive industry, the "enthusiasts" (I noticed this in the tech circles as well, those that labels themselves enthusiasts, with the most amount of knowledge seem to be the least able or least willing to adapt - strange) will bitch and moan until they finally realize they were wrong and should just accept that things change. Like going from a carburetor to direct injecting. Or to hydraulic steering; we're seeing the same thing right now with moving to EPAS - which itself will probably die down in a few years.

The only thing that remains constant, is that things change. And there will be people that will bitch about that change, endlessly.

I love and work on any of them. The principles of fueling and timing haven't changed over the years. The real main differences are things like variable valve timing or cylinder cutoff - those have had the biggest impact on engine efficiency. There have been plenty of others, combustion chamber design, etc but the others don't change the aspects of tuning as much.

All very true, despite the fact that a large percentage of the classics population in the US is probably fairly prone to look at a DOHC with remote ECM I4 and say "Fuck this, I'm out". There doesn't seem to be an easy solution for that.

Honestly, if all cars go electric I will probably stop being a car person. That grumble and scream from exhaust and engine noise is half the experience to me.
